Melisa Thorne's Fundraising Page
Greetings Friends,
Thank you for visiting my Personal Fundraising Page. On April 19, 2010 I will be running the Boston Marathon as a charity runner for the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism.
Along with training, I am in fund-raising mode. I have committed to raising $3000.00 for my charity.
Please help me and help the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism and make a tax-deductible donation. I realize that in this economy it is difficult to donate funds but any little bit helps, even if it's just a few dollars.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to my fundraising efforts. Many thanks for your support
The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism has been serving the autism community for 10 years.
Their goal is to promote awareness and support families affected by autism spectrum disorders. They are committed to funding organizations that provide direct services, family support grants, education, advocacy and recreational opportunities with the purpose of improving the quality of life for individuals with autism and their families.
Today, it is estimated that one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. An estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide are affected by autism. Government statistics suggest the prevalence rate of autism is increasing 10-17 percent annually. There is not established explanation for this increase, although improved diagnosis and environmental influences are two reasons often considered. Studies suggest boys are more likely than girls to develop autism and receive the diagnosis three to four times more frequently. Current estimates are that in the United States alone, one out of 94 boys is diagnosed with autism.
Training for a marathon takes a lot of hard work and commitment but this is nothing compared to what the families affected by autism spectrum disorders are faced with daily.
