Mah Jongg Marathon
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
When I was very young, I played with my grandmother's Mah Jongg tiles as if they were Legos or Froebel blocks. I especially loved the images on the flowers.
When I was older a neighbor taught me how to play but I didn't stick with it.
Recently my mother reintroduced me to Mah Jongg and I love it. Sadly, my grandmother's set was damaged in a flood but I saved some tiles and had a jeweler make a few bracelets and a set of cufflinks from the surviving tiles.
About a year ago I was in San Francisco and saw a set like my grandmother's in an exhibit about the Jews of China. While I was looking at it a Jewish woman who had lived in China during the war years came by and told me a little bit about herself and her experiences. She admired the set and said she wished she had taken hers with her when she left China.
That people think of Mah Jongg as a Jewish game amuses me and I have talked with my Asian colleagues about the difference between the way we play it and the way they do.
I would like to support the Museum of Jewish Heritage for hosting this exhibit by participating in their fund-raising effort. They are asking for a minimum donation of $18 (or multiples thereof).
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
Krak! Bam!
Love,
Merry
