2007 Rhino Charge - Car 22
We have yet again entered our 20 yr old farm jalopy, Car 22, in this our 18th Rhino Charge. We are at last nearing the end of this Rhino Ark project which was started way back in 1989. Few people thought that it could be done, that we could raise enough money and enthusiasm to complete such an enormous undertaking. But we have and we are proud of it.
We are now on the final push to complete the fence around Kenya's Aberdare Mountain range. The fence will enclose the indigenous forest and moorlands which are the main water catchment area for most of Kenya’s big rivers and the last stronghold of the Black Rhino and many other rare and special creatures such as the Bongo. It also protects the local forest-edge community from damage to their crops by the wild animals of the forest. We intend that we should finish the fence, with the exception of Kipipiri Mountain (a last minute addition to the protected area), by the end of the year and by the end of 2008 the whole project should be complete.
The story of the Rhino Ark fence has attracted a great deal of attention and as a result other conservation areas in other countries have been inspired and their custodians are trying to emulate our project. We are also getting enquiries about the Rhino Ark's recycled plastic post making operation that Mike & I run on a voluntary basis. The posts are doing really well and are a credit to the fence!
