Living in the Northwest we are so lucky to have such abundant clean water -- if only every place could be so blessed.

As part of my Bar Mitzvah, I've decided to support Water 1st International and their work to bring clean water and toilets to places that need it.

Here's why:

1) Lack of access to water and toilets kills children: It's the #1 preventable cause of death and it kills more children than wars or earthquakes. More than malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB combined. Simple access to water and toilets could prevent so many diseases and deaths. 

 2) It devastates women and girls: Girls and mothers carry water instead of going to school or generating income for the family. Frequently they must travel great distances through unsafe conditions to retrieve water. Can you imagine spending 1/4 or 1/3 of your life just retrieving water?

 3) It deepens poverty: Poor people spend a high percentage of their household income on medical treatment to combat preventable illnesses caused by lack of water and toilets.

I looked at several water charities and selected this one because they work with local groups to build maintenance and accountability into the plans for each water and sanitation project. As a result the wells are long-lasting have a very low failure rate.
