Come walk with us at the ST. LOUIS WALK FOR FOOD ALLERGIES

Thank you for visiting Nick's Food Allergy Fundraising Page.  As many of you know, aside from having asthma, Nick has several serious food allergies.  He is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts.  Any of these foods can cause severe reactions including anaphylaxis, which can be fatal.  Although Nick has never had an anaphylatic reaction, the potential still exists.

Currently there is no cure or treatment and the only way to prevent a reaction is strict avoidance.  We are hoping that some day Nick will be able to enjoy all the foods most kids take for granted such as birthday cake, ice cream or pizza.  We must read ingredients on everything Nick eats and even after we know the ingredients we still worry about cross contamination.  This can make simple pleasures such as going to a restaurant, birthday party or even a friends house difficult. Nick must always carry his epipen, anti-histamine and inhaler wherever he goes.

The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network's (FAAN's) Moving Toward a Cure Walk is a fundraiser that supports food allergy research and promotes awareness to this public health issue.  Most recently, FAAN was instrumental in the passage of the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act, which was signed into law by President Bush.  This new legislation requires food manufacturers to clearly list major food allergens on all food packaging.  This is extremely helpful in keeping Nick and other allergic children safe.

Approximately 11 million people, or 4% of the population, suffer from food allergies.  This condition results in more than 30,000 trips to emergency rooms and an estimated 150 to 200 deaths each year in the .

Many times Nick ask's when he will grow out of these allergies but unfortunately we don’t have an answer to this question.  FAAN is working hard to raise funds for research to hopefully find an answer to this question and many others.  We are members of FAAN and it's a wonderful organization.  We have learned so much from FAAN's resourses to help us get through the difficulties that living with food allergies can bring.

Our family doesn’t make a practice of contacting people asking for support unless it's a cause that is near and dear to our hearts.  On Nick's behalf, we are asking you to consider making a donation to FAAN and/or participate in the walk by joining Nick's team.

Nick is very excited about this event and would love to see his friends and family come out to support him on Sunday, September 24th at Forest Park .  To pre-register go to click on walks, sign me up, set started, st. louis.  (you may also register the day of the walk)
