American Friends of UNRWA (AFU) is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that provides support for the humanitarian work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) through advocacy, fundraising, and education. AFU aims to educate the general American public about the situation of Palestinian refugees and generate support for UNRWA's education, health, and social service program in all five of its geographic fields of operation.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) was established in 1949 by the UN General Assembly resolution 302 (IV). UNRWA was created to provide direct relief to Palestine refugees following the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict. Today UNRWA continues to fulfill its mandate by providing humanitarian assistance and human development programs to 5 million refugees living in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.
