Nanie Flaherty's Fundraising Page
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
Many, many thanks for your support -- your good wishes, your interest in dyslexia and literacy, and your financial generosity. Your donations support the International Dyslexia Association's advocacy efforts for literacy on a national level, and the efforts of the Pennsylvania/Delaware (PBIDA) on the local level. With the funds raised, PBIDA will continue in its efforts to provide education and advocacy efforts across the two states.
Research tells us that as many as 15–20% of the population have difficulties with reading. Dyslexia occurs in people of all backgrounds and intellectual levels. People who are very bright can be dyslexic. Individuals with dyslexia are often capable or even gifted in areas that do not require strong language skills, such as art, computer science, design, drama, electronics, math, mechanics, music, physics, sales, and sports.
The core difficulty of dyslexia is weakness in word recognition and reading fluency, spelling, and writing. Dyslexia is referred to as a learning disability because dyslexia can make it very difficult for a student to succeed academically in the typical instructional environment. Early identification and treatment are the keys to helping dyslexics achieve in school and in life. Literacy is an essential functional skill for adult life; with early identification and treatment we can help more individuals achieve adult literacy.
My goal this year is to run, not walk, the whole course. You can't help me achieve that goal--I have to do that--but you can help me support individuals with dyslexia in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Thank you!
