I volunteered for Northrise University in Ndola, Zambia in August of 2010. There I was able to work with the local elementary schools, teach classes to the students at Northrise University, and work on the farm harvesting bananas and selling them to the local markets. Northrise has established both a working farm and a technology business to employ graduates and generate future revenue to support university operations. On the farm, I realized that the farmers I was working along with had to walk three hours each way to work because they could not afford the freeway bus system. Its hard to imagine walking for miles just to get to work, leaving and coming home in the dark. This motivated me to ask a little more about how the students are able to get around town and the results where they either walk or have to wait late in the hours for their parents or loved ones to pick them up because its too dangerous to walk at night. I told President Moffat Zimba of Northrise that I wanted to help the university out by buying bicycles for their students, faculty, and workers. I thought the greatest way to to raise money for this cause was to have a bike trip with friends and family from Los Angeles to San Diego. -Alexander Plumb
The Northrise Bike Team will ride for two days starting on June 23rd.
Please help the members of this wonderful bike group with any donation possible.
Northrise Platinum Sponsor- $500
This platinum sponsorship will purchase 5 bicycles for Northrise University. Each platinum sponsor will receive an exclusive Northrise Bike Team riding jersey as a thankyou for your support and generosity.
Northrise Gold sponsor- $125
This gold sponsorship represents the 125 mile bike ride from Los Angeles to San Diego for the riders. $125 dollars will purchase a bicycle in Zambia plus extra bicycle supplies.
Your contributions will be going towards the purchase of more than 50 bicycles, a bicycle repair shop, and extra bicycle supplies for the students, faculty, and workers of Northrise. These contributions will provide workers to get to and from work with ease, provide safety for the students by allowing them to get home before dark, and allow more freedom to the staff to explore the land of Zambia.
Thank you for the support!
