Quick facts:

- Less than half of the children in India attend school

- 17 million children work just because they cannot afford to go to school

- India has 35% of the world's illiterate children and a literacy rate of 65%

- Women receive on average only 1.8 years of schooling in India

- More than 50% of girls fail to enroll in school; those that do are likely to drop out by the age of 12

- Average class sizes are up to 40 students nationwide and up to 83 in the Indian state of Bihar
