I will never forget the day..January 2006 at a McKeown family night, this women, Deb asked me if I would be interested in joining her for the Polar Plunge. The WHAT I asked? To jump in the ocean for a shelter and Beverly affordable housing she explains. Mind you, that day was very warm. I have pictures of Lydia and her friend sitting in our back yard with t-shirts on..so of course I said YES.
The morning of plunge arrived. I woke up to the thermostate reading 18 degrees..at 11am, on way to Lynch park, it warmed up to 25 degrees. YIKES..I thought to myself what a fool I am...I like the winter...but can I REALLY do this??
We all gathered at the beach...about 50 of us...No Deb in sight however. My family, my firends and a whole bunch of supporters are cheering all of us on. That's when the weather didn't matter anymore. The warmth from the crowds gave me enough "heat" and courage to go. The count down begins..10, 9, 8 (ect) 1 we all plunged in the water.
I have never been so cold in my life...especially my feet...and that's when it hit me. YES I can go home and get warm..I am fortunate...and realized, not all people are this fortunate. I will plunge for as long as I am able, in hopes to help anyone and everyone, NOT to have to be that cold...and have some place to go. Yes, Deb was there, and is now my yearly "running" partner.
I am very proud that Lydia has joined in. This will be her 4th plunge...and she completed the double dip challenge last year!!
Our goal is to raise one more dollar than last year. AND you are more than welcome to become a plunger :) Please come down February 5th at 12:30.
Thank you
Pattie and Lydia
