Hello to Family friends, Colleagues, and fellow Professionals;
Who knew about a pediatric cancer called Neuroblastoma until one of our own became diagnosed. Neuroblastoma is the nastiest of pediatric cancers and coincidentally, the most difficult to treat. In the United States, 600 children will be given this diagnosis this year. Statistics show that if a child is diagnosed under the age of 18 months, they have a survival rate of 93%, children diagnosed after 18 months of age, they have a 30% chance for life into adulthood . For those children who make it to remission but relapse, there is no cure. Due to low volume of patients, the pharmaceutical companies refuse to invest in new drugs targeting this disease; the market simply is not large enough to yield any sort of revenue. Reality is so sad.
The standard treatment therapy for Neuroblastoma is the most toxic therapy given to any cancer patient. These children are exposed to chemotherapy toxins and radiation that will cause life long issues, if they are fortunate to survive. It’s a shame the pharmaceutical companies are more concerned about making a profit then saving a life, at any age.
Currently there are promising drugs that already exist, but there is a lack of funding to get these drugs into clinical trials where they may benefit these wonderful kids. The Magicwater Project was established to provide funding for these clinical studies. I personally became too familiar with Neuroblastoma when a friend of my daughters was diagnosed at the young age of 6 with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, (May 2005). They shared Kindergarten together, and a friendship. What was happening to her perfect little friend? Our community was devastated by the news and we all contributed our efforts for the Brunskow’s in numerous ways.
Eden Brunskow and her parents traveled West to East coasts many different ways and discovered how many types of drug therapies are available and not available. In February 2008, Paul and Nina hugged and cried their love one, Eden, as she went to heaven with angel wings. Their family and friends grieved with them and their sorrow.
On October 26th, 2008 we held a fundraiser, “HallowEden” in hopes to raise much needed funds for the Magicwater project. Participants Paul, Brian, Heidi, Mickey, Kelly, Lynn and Bonnie raised over $40,000 by turning their hair Orange! Yes it’s true, since I was instrumental in participating by bleaching the hair white and/or as white / canary yellow as we could, then colored it Orange at the event. Yes, Orange was Eden’s favorite color and Halloween was her favorite holiday. 100% of the money raised was donated to The MagicWaterProject which helped fund a new clinical trial that has recently opened!
On May xx, I wish to do my personal donation by cutting my naturally orange colored red hair and donate the length to “Locks of Love” for our angel Eden, her friends, and the Magicwater Project.
This event is called “Halo Eden “. Your $10 donation or greater will support this most needed foundation for our children whom any day could be diagnosed with any type of a pediatric cancer. Your donation will link you to a video of the “Haircutting Event” and all the festivities of the day.
If you wish to attend, our event is from 11am to 3pm on Sunday May xx , the J Ludwig Salon will be offering Haircuts, Beautiful brows, Makeup play station, Mini Facials, and a % of Product sales so all proceeds will be donated to Magicwater.org Plus a raffle !
