I'm again taking part in a bike ride to raise money for Beyond The 11th, an organization co-founded by my friend Susan Retik. Beyond The 11th funds programs that help widows in Afghanistan develop and deploy skills that enable them to generate income and become self sufficient. It's all about education and empowerment!
This year, proceeds from the ride will fund a training program for local women to become skilled birth attendants. Maternal and infant mortality rates in Afghanistan are horrifyingly high. Candidates who successfully complete the training program will learn skills that could prevent nearly 70% of childbirth-related deaths. Not only will this program save lives, it will provide the widows with valuable skills, enabling them to contribute to the support of their families and improve their social status within their community.
