A sense of community, an artistic outlet, a social/political forum, a family, a source of pride – this is what the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus means to me.
I joined NYCGMC the day after I arrived in New York City in spring 2002. It’s hard to put into word just how thrilling and powerful it is to stand in unity with 250 men singing about equality, tolerance, home, family, and love. Whether in a large venue like Carnegie Hall or in a small community center in the Bronx with our outreach program NYCGMC spreads the word of equality and inclusion.
NYCGMC is a member of Big Apple Performing Arts (BAPA) which also serves as the home to UPTOWN EXPRESS, a cool 5-guy vocal pop group, and the YOUTH PRIDE CHORUS (YPC) whose mission is to engage the individual and collective voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied youth ages 13-21 in the movement for social change.
YPC hold a special place in my heart. Having grown up in a small industrial town in Pennsylvania without any gay role models I know how tough it can be to be young, gay and alone. YPC gives these young people a positive creative outlet, a sense of confidence and pride, and a place to call home.
