Mary's March For The Cure - Saturday October 25th, 2008

Dear Friends,

My sister, Ann, put together a few words about my Mom, Mary Ellen Walter. She passed away eight years ago at age 57 -- much too soon:

"Mom was the daughter of a very hardworking farmer. She was the only sister to four brothers. She was a wife to her husband, Fred, for 34 years. She was an amazing mother to four children. She was a nurse who chose to spend her life helping others. She loved to read books, write letters, share jokes and LAUGH. And so much more!

Mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. A mastectomy and chemo followed. To no one’s surprise, she only missed a few days of work. Mom was a natural woman -- she hated wearing her wig, and wasn’t a fan of her “fake boob” either. As the years went by, we thought she had beat cancer. Instead, it was attacking her liver.

Before she died, she was supposed to help me plan my wedding, she was supposed to get an e-mail account, she was supposed to watch her son run a marathon, she was supposed to write down our family medical history, she was supposed to babysit her first grandchild. And so much more.

Why my Mom? Was it hereditary? Was it the chemicals she was exposed to on the farm? Was it diet? We may never know in this lifetime, but thankfully, there are organizations out there trying to find answers. Not just for me, but for the millions of people out there affected by cancer."

I would like to thank everyone for their support and look forward to seeing you at "Mary's March For The Cure".

Philip Walter
