Hello PKU Supporter,

I am a supporter and fundraiser for the Eastern Pennsylvania Charter of MACPAD. My story is quite simple, I'm an ordinary Uncle trying to do extraordinary things to raise donations for awareness of PKU which my niece was diagnosed with shortly after her birth. This will be my third fundraiser since 2009 and I have raised over $5100 in total donations during my first two years.

Phenylketonuria is an inherited genetic metabolic disorder in which the enzyme required to digest phenylalanine (PHE), a part of protein, is either missing or does not work correctly. As a result of this missing or defective enzyme, individuals with PKU, if untreated, will develop high levels of PHE in their blood, which can affect brain development and function. By following a strict low PHE diet, individuals with PKU can avoid any problems associated with high PHE levels. Other “allied disorders” also exist where individuals cannot break down galactose (galactosemia), glutaric acid (glutaric aciduria), or other components of proteins.

The Mid-Atlantic Connection for PKU and Allied Disorders (MACPAD) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to improving the health and well being of individuals and families affected by Phenylketonuria (PKU) and related metabolic disorders. MACPAD has several local chapters to serve PKU families, as well as families with other metabolic disorders. I am supporter and fundraiser for the Easter Pennsylvania Charter of MACPAD.

We are hoping to raise awareness and money for research to find a cure for PKU. We hope to do this by organizing and hosting our First Annual “Pounding Pavement 5k for PKU.” The date of the race is Sunday, October 23rd, 2011, at 9:00am hosted by White Deer Golf Course in Montgomery, PA. We are reaching out to supporters like you, in the hope of securing any support, whether in the form of volunteers, monetary donations, food donations (both regular and low protein), or any other resources to benefit this important initiative.

This event is United States Track and Field Certified and also chip timing services will be provided by PaRunners.com. Live entertainment will be provided by Rob Iacuzio.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
