On November 1st, I will be walking in honor of my neighbor, fellow choir member and friend, Stephanie Haney.  Last year, she was diagnosed with Stage IV, metastatic lung cancer.  She has never smoked, has not been exposed to any considerable amount of second-hand smoke and doesn't have any of the other typical risk factors associated with the disease. 

Stephanie is a wife and mother, with two beautiful young daughters who she is fighting cancer for. I will do everything I can to help her and her family with their fight against cancer. 

Some things you might not know about lung cancer:

• Lung cancer kills over 160,000 people a year in the United States.  It will kill:
  • More people than breast, prostate, colon, live, kidney, and melanoma cancers... combined.
  • Over three times as many men as prostate cancer.
  • Nearly twice as many women as breast cancer.
  • An average of 439 people a day

• Over 60% of new cases are never smokers or former smokers, many of whom quit decades ago.
• Only 15% of lung cancer patients live beyond five years.  In fact, over half of lung cancer patients die within one year of diagnosis.
