A local Basset breeder cannot care for her hounds anymore, so we are raising money for over 63 of them to be adopted. It costs about $400 to prepare each pet for adoption, please donate whatever you can to the Golden Gate Basset rescue to help these displaced hounds!
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
Please read the info about Basset Kennel Closure from the Golden Gate Basset Rescue-
Numbers increase to 63 Bassets to bring home for Christmas....
We need your help even more!
A team of six volunteers (Pattie Miller and Don Chambers, Terri Lightfoot, Diana Erickson and Paula and Dave Sellars) went up to the kennel yesterday, Friday, December 11. It was a rainy day and of course a very long one for all concerned. The dogs are used to using the doggie doors to get in and out, so hopefully that will be a head start on the housetraining!
A total of 58 dogs were vaccinated and wormed, plus 5 were isolated to be treated for giardia and coccidia. Four hounds were bailed out yesterday... three went home with Paula and Dave Sellars and spent much of today hiding outside in her yard. They are now showing signs of interest in their new home and Paula is hopeful they will soon settle nicely. We are working on coordinating a transport for Friday of this week, that will see every hound off the premises and on their way to a loving foster home.
I want to stress the cooperation that we are getting from this breeder. It is only the last 14 months or so that conditions have deteriorated. She knows that she is doing the best for her hounds by letting them be rehomed by Rescue. With the downturn in the economy many of her puppies were not selling, so the numbers of dogs were rising much faster than she could cope with. Her husband has a serious illness and she had to return to work full time. After struggling virtually alone for the last year, she is working with us to transition these hounds into loving homes.
Having said that, these hounds have been living in a kennel environment for some time. The youngest dogs we are getting so far are just around one year old, and should quickly adjust to a new life. Many are in the range of 3-6 and have had litters. Although they have been handled, fed and cared for by humans, they are not used to life inside a home and will need time and lots of tender, loving care to adjust. Some are friendly, some are timid, and some are just not sure! They are not house-trained, not leash-trained, and will need lots of patience!
Talking to other rescues who have also taken in commercial kennel dogs, the joy of seeing a hound discover the joys of a soft bed, or couch is soul-warming and not to be missed. Hounds rescued from this type of situation seem to know how lucky they are and will return the love you can give them ten-fold. They just need time to learn how to be basset hounds again....
Personal interest story - My own dog, Jess, is from this kennel.... given to us as a puppy. She led me to GGBR and is now able to say (woof!) she is saving her extended family from a lifetime of puppy producing. Several of the dogs in these photos remind me so much of her. She is a sweetheart. Small (39lbs, my vet calls her a lap-basset), good natured temperament, no genetic health problems. She is now five years old and still behaves like a puppy. Jess says "please help to rescue these hounds"!
