On May 6, I am running the Broad Street Run -- a 10-mile race through Philadelphia -- as a member of the Racing to Register Team. Racing to Register (RTR) is a local, non-profit organization with a goal of raising awareness on the need to increase the number of potential marrow, stem cell and cord blood donors, using endurance sports as its platform.

I became aware of this organization through our good friends, Pam & Tom Kramer.   Ron & I have volunteered for the registry drive booth at various endurance sports events throughout the area.   The Broad Street Run is another way to bring awareness to this important cause. 

RTR was started as a website in 2011 when Tom Kramer undertook the mission of completing one marathon, two half Ironman and one full Ironman race in one year. Tom’s wife, Pam has been living with a form of Leukemia for 11 years and they are still in search of a bone marrow match. RTR’s mission is not only to raise awareness, but to also inspire people to become potential bone marrow donors by joining the donor registries. The more people in the registry, the better the chance for a perfect match for Pam and the 10,000 other people that are seeking their perfect match.

 

To date, RTR has registered over 1,300 people and has facilitated two potential matches for patients.
