What we are doing:
What we are doing: In Autumn 2010 we will be participating in the RickshawRun an annual event from The Adventurists. Our team, Raiders of the Lost Tuk, will travel 2,000 miles in 2 weeks across India in an auto rickshaw. A bit larger than a golf cart, prone to breaking down and having a max speed of 30mph, the rickshaw or Tuk Tuk is the ideal mode of travel across the subcontinent. Our unique and exciting journey is dedicated to raising vital funds for Friends of Maiti Nepal.
What we are raising for and why:
Friends of Maiti Nepal is a charity that exists to offer help, support, protection and rehabilitation to Nepali girls and women who are victims, or have been victims in the past of crimes such as domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labor and various forms of exploitation and torture.
Did you know that roughly 10,000 to 15,000 Nepali women and girls are trafficked to India annually, while 7,500 children are trafficked domestically for commercial sexual exploitation? Nepalese girls as young as six are at risk of being sold to brothels in India. Your donation will go to the prevention, advocacy, rescue and rehabilitation of these victims.
Maiti Nepal's nine intervention outposts on the Nepal/India border are the frontline for rescue of potential victims and the prevention of sex trafficking. In 2007 at Mahendranager alone, 148 children and women were rescued from sex traffickers. Last year a total of 1,747 children and women were saved by the intervention of Maiti Nepal.
Our Fundraising Goals:
As one of just 60 teams from around the globe handpicked to participate in the Autumn 2010 Rickshaw Run, our team, Raiders of the Lost Tuk, has set a goal of raising $2,250 for Maiti Nepal by April 2010. This amount will enable three girls that have been the victims of sexual trafficking and abuse in Nepal and India to live in the Maiti Nepal Child Protection Home and receive formal education for one year.
For your donation, you will receive recognition on our website as one of our generous supporters. Our team website will “go live” by March 2010, with the first press activity promoting this event and our website appearing in the March 2010 issue of United Airline’s in-flight magazine, Hemispheres. With press activities planned throughout the year to help promote this charitable endeavor, as well, all of this adds a great deal of exposure for you and your contribution.
