Melrose Alliance Against Violence 16th Annual Walk & Candlelight Vigil
Lauren Astley was 18 years old, had just graduated from Wayland High School and was looking forward to attending Elon University in the fall. On July 4, 2011, this beautiful, caring and talented young woman was brutally murdered, allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. He took advantage of her caring nature, badgering her with text messages to please come over to talk...one last time.
I am outraged and saddened by every death resulting from dating or domestic violence, but Lauren's death had particular impact. She reminds me so much of my own daughters, Katharine and Kellen. I read that she loved clothes, loved to sing, and was a Unitarian Universalist who loved traveling to New Orleans and helping rebuild houses. I look at this picture and feel like I know this family.. and my heart breaks for them.
I have served as the Executive Director of MAAV for the past 14 years. Lauren and so many other victims are why I stay committed to this work. Our peer leaders teach other students about teen dating violence, including the message to never be alone with an abusive partner after a break-up. I can't help but wonder if Lauren would be alive today if she and/or her friends had received the education we provide to students each year.
I am very proud that our teen dating violence prevention programs were featured on the Channel 5 news in August.
I am asking for your support once again, my kind friends and family, as our work is ongoing. Please help us break the cycle of domestic violence.
Please know that your donation in any amount is deeply, sincerely appreciated ;-)
THANK YOU!
Rebecca
