“Run for Someone Else’s Life” is Samaritans’ annual event to help raise funds to reduce incidences of suicide and emotional despair in Greater Boston: www.samaritansofboston.org/5k.html
This year, I am walking and raising funds in memory of my friend Carl who committed suicide in April 2005. He was one of the most compassionate and brilliant individuals I ever had the honor of knowing, and his death was a tragedy.
He had infinite love and compassion for the world, but in his despair he wasn't able to reach out for the support he needed for himself.
Here is one of the poems he shared with me just a couple months before he committed suicide. I hope it shows the kind of person he was, the kind of light the world has lost in his passing, and a hope for others in despair.
I fear not for myself--perhaps I should
I fear for the pain of others
I'd take it all, if I could. . .
I trust not my self--perhaps I should
I trust for the sake of others
In truthful fall, as I would. . .
I learn--not for myself--perhaps I should
I learn--for the sake of others
In learning to teach, be understood. . .
I reach not for myself--perhaps I should
I reach out--for the sake of others
In reaching, I'm feeling good. . .
