Why support this charity?
In 2001, Peter was diagnosed with cancer. Peter was only 37 years old and collapsed at work. At the time his children were only three years and eight years old. He was a young IT professional and had just started his own business. All his life Peter was a sport fanatic and ran several marathons and cycled professionally when he was much younger. Cancer was the last thing we expected and with such a rare cancer it was a long and hard battle. If it wasn’t for trial drugs and the funds of GCRF for research Peter would not have had an extra five years to spend with his family and friends.
In 2006, Peter had the vision to raise money for GCRF and a team of 10-15 cyclists gathered from various countries across the world. They cycled from Land's End to John O Groats in the United Kingdom, a distance of a1000 miles. The riders finished the race in 10 days. This event says volumes about Peter, he motivated, inspired and persuaded a varied group of people and companies to participate and give support, time and money to the ride. He organised, planned and trained, while still undergoing treatment. His positive attitude, fighting spirit and courage inspired the team to complete the ride in his honour. Sadly Peter passed away on the 22 August. With this ride a huge amount of $85 000 was raised. In 2006 Peter wrote : “The GISTe2e is very important to me. It’s about contributing to finding a cure, but it is also about showing the kids what their Dad was once made of and capable of. I hope I can do it.“ Please help us raise money for GIST and keeping Peter’s memories alive.
In 2009 another team of family, friends and colleagues from 9 different countries around the world gathered in Montreal and cycled a 1000 miles to New York and raised $60 000. Dylan, Peter's son, was only 10 at the time and cycled every mile to keep Peter's dream alive.
Please support our efforts in 2012 when we will be cycling a 1000 miles in South Africa raising awareness about this vary rare cancer as well as raising much needed funds to support the research.
