This year I have signed on as a Challenge Walker with the goal of raising $2,000.
At no time in COTS history have we ever served so many homeless children. During October, the start of the school year, there were 141 homeless students in Chittenden County. That's a sharp increase from the previous fall when the number was 63.
The funds we raise for the COTS Walk provide a wide range of support to those who are homeless or at imminent risk of losing their homes. In addition to play groups and art activities for children, we offer job groups, help with budgeting and housing searches for adults. We often serve as the bridge betweem school and families when parents are overwhelmed by the enormity of their challenges. .
Even more, COTS Prevention Fund is a vital lifeline for those who have fallen behind on their rent. Last year, this resource helped to avert homelessness for 300 households in our communtiy.
I know too well how many people we had to turn away this past year becasue we didn't have enough funds to help so many - families whose evictions coud have been avoided if we'd had more resources to assist them..
The math is as heartbreaking as it is simple: the more we raise, the more we can help. The less we raise, the more we have to turn away.
Given the extraordinary number of people struggling right now to cover the high cost of housiing on very tight incomes, I'm hoping you will give as generously as you can.
Every dollar we raise for the COTS Walk goes directly to support emergency services and homeless prevention. This is becuse we have generous sponsors who underwrite our event expenses.
