Flying Saucers
When my 4 siblings and I were kids, whenever we had a notable achievement, whether in the classroom, sports fields, or something else, my father would bring home a pack of "Flying Saucers", round ice-cream sandwiches made by the Carvel company. "To celebrate your flying performance", he would say.
On Nov 1, 2000, we lost my father to suicide at the age of 63. He had a long and successful career as a psychologist, where he helped countless individuals avoid the level of illness and despair to which he ultimately succumbed. Despite his zest for life and his profound understanding of the human mind, my father suffered from periodic bouts with clinical depression.
He was the gentlest, most compassionate man I have ever known, and he led an exemplary life. It is this beautiful life on which we choose to focus, and which we will celebrate on October 3rd...with a "pack" of Flying Saucers.
Please consider joining our team for this 5K run or walk, and help support Samaritans, Inc. in their work to reduce incidences of suicide and emotional despair in Greater Boston.
