SURFAID was founded by Dr. Dave Jenkins after a vacation in the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, when he discovered the degree of childhood suffering occurring only meters from luxury surf charter boats. In the worst affected Mentawai villages, 53% of Mentawia families have lost at least one one child between the ages of 0 and 12 years from preventable and treatable diseases, such as malaria, measles, tetanus and diarrhea. SurfAid implements results-driven health projects to help people gain control over their own health and ensure that a long-lasting legacy of better health remains.
