Copper at age 5 came to us in December of 2001 as foster! Copper was a handsome boy and such a clown! Three weeks after getting him, GABR found out Copper had cancer. :o( Dr. Dee, the vet, gave him 3 weeks to 3 months to live. Copper became one of GABR's permanent fosters and the love of our lives! However, 4 months went by then 6, then 8, then a year, and then 2. In 2003, GABR paid for a surgery to remove a tumor that was pushing on his stomach, not allowing him to eat without vomitting. After surgery, Copper went back to his bad habit of eating garbage, drinking from the toilet, eating carpet, and getting into things! Copper lived to be mischievious!
Copper had 2 more years of getting into mischief after that surgery! On October 21st, 2005 Copper passed away from liver failure at 10 years of age. It really was not a shock, but if I have learned anything from Copper, it was to live everyday to the fullest, to have hope, never, ever drink out of the toilet! Mark and I both were kind of in a daze and really were not quite sure where to go from there. Between Copper and Oddie, they were quite high maintenance dogs and then when they passed away within 4 months of one another, there really was not much to do. Copper loved to eat trash, steal loaves of bread and buns off of the counter, drink out of the toilet, tip over the garbage cans, hog the bed and my blankets, made a great pillow, would snore in my ear, cut off the circulation to my legs at night while he slept on them, and most importantly, was always in the room with you no matter where you are at. Someone else's giving him up was our opportunity to have one of our most precious gifts in the world! Although he had Cancer, we had almost four wonderful years with him and we loved him dearly! We miss him terribly! If it hadn't been for GABR, Copper would've never lived nearly 4 years longer! GABR saves basset lives and enriches human lives!
On Sunday, September 17th, we're walking in the 2006 Illinois Waddle. This event is held every year in Dwight, Illinois as a benefit for the Guardian Angel Basset Rescue, Inc. Each year, GABR rescues and places over 250 Basset Hounds in the Indiana and Illinois area. As you can imagine, their vet bills are very large, averaging over $10,000 per month. We've decided to help them raise money to pay those bills.
Will you please sponsor us in the Illinois Waddle? The walk is 10 blocks long so I'm asking you to pledge $1, $5, $10 or more per block. You simply click on the link to donate. Enter your credit card number on the secure page and you're done! The Bassets of Guardian Angel need your support - thank you very much for helping.
