Strollin' for Nolan
Dear Family & Friends:
We want to tell you of a special event that we will be participating in. We will be walking in the 9th annual Buddy Walk for Down syndrome on October 1st. We are walking to help raise awareness and money to fund the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota (DSAM). DSAM’s mission is to provide information, resources and to support individuals with Down syndrome, their families and their communities. They provide outreach support and services and seek to ensure that all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
The following is some information on Down syndrome for those that are curious:
• Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder which usually causes delays in physical, intellectual and language development.
• Down syndrome is one of the leading causes of mental retardation - it is not related to race, nationality, religion or socioeconomic status.
• The incidence of Down syndrome in the United States is estimated to be 1 in every 800-1,100 live births (about 4,000 individuals each year) affecting approximately one-quarter million families.
• The exact cause and prevention of Down syndrome are currently unknown.
• Down syndrome occurs at the moment of conception
• While the likelihood of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome increases with maternal age; never the less, 80% of babies with Down syndrome are born to women under 35 years of age, as women in that age group give birth to more babies overall.
• There is wide variation in mental abilities, behavior and physical development in individuals with Down syndrome. Each individual has his/her own unique personality, capabilities and talents.
• 30-50% of the individuals with Down syndrome have heart defects and 8-12% have gastrointestinal tract abnormalities present at birth. Most of these defects are now correctable by surgery.
• Individuals with Down syndrome benefit from loving homes, early intervention, special education, appropriate medical care and positive public attitudes.
• In adulthood, many persons with Down syndrome hold jobs, live independently and enjoy recreational opportunities in their communities.
Our participation in this walk is especially meaningful to our family. As many of you know, our son Nolan was diagnosed with Down syndrome shortly after his birth last September. There have been some ups and downs this year, but thanks to support from our family, friends and the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota, we have been able to get the assistance we need to help reach Nolan’s fullest potential.
We don't like to ask for money, but because this cause is so important, we’re putting on our walking shoes and asking anyway. We hope that you will consider sponsoring us as we join the Buddy Walk in October. Together we can make a difference. We are extremely grateful for whatever amount you can give - no amount is too small!
