Aloha.
I'm Salatha Helton, and I'm originally from Sacramento, California; however, I currently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Great Aloha Run was brought to my attention a few months ago, and at first I was apprehensive. I have NEVER participated in a race, but after I gave it more thought, I realized that I could have an active voice in this race.
My mother told me that when I was a baby she would attempt to bottle feed me, but I refused. I have always suffered from eczema, so that was the only explanation that was ever offered by doctors. Unfortunately, In the 1980's there wasn't as much research on food allergies as we have today. It would later be discovered that my dissatisfaction was a result of food allergies. My problem with food persisted throughout my teen and adult years. Almost any raw fruit or vegetable that I would eat would cause a reaction. My mouth would swell, and my throat and ears would itch uncontrollably. I was afraid to eat, because I didn't know what affect the food would have on my body.
I was miserable my first year of college, because I would rely on the Cafeteria food. After eating certain foods; I would wheez, and it felt as if something was literally stuck in my throat.
Since my episodes with food, I have been diagnosed with Oral Allergy Syndrome. Being able to put a name to my discomfort with certain foods is rewarding, because I now have the knowledge to be able to properly eat. Sure, there are times when the waiters at restaurants are probably annoyed with me asking a million questions regarding ingredients, but if it means my safety and health, so be it!
Knowing that I have food allergies doesn't mean that I'll never have an episode again, but it does mean that I am always aware, cautious, and constantly educating myself and others.
In 2008, I watched Celebrity Apprentice, and saw Country music star Trace Adkins talk about his daughter who suffers from food allergies. His story touched and inspired me. Through the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network's (FAAN) I have been educated even more than I could have ever imagined. More than 12 million Americans have food allergies, including 3 million children.
On February 15, 2010, I will race in the Great Aloha Run. This is my first race ever! I'm not a professional runner and I am certain that I will struggle with the 8.15 mile race, but it will be rewarding and well worth it. 100% of the money raised for this event will go directly to support the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network's efforts in food allergy awareness, advocacy, education, and research. I ask that people help and support this cause to raise awareness and contribute to the research of finding a cure for people living with and suffering from food allergies.
Please join me in supporting the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network by donating.
Thank you,
Salatha Helton
