On Sunday, November 6th, I will be playing drums, alongside hundreds of other drummers, in the Texas BigBeat 2011 drumming for charity event. The event raises money for two great charities ; the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation and Cherish our Children International.
Mr. Hollands Opus Foundation keeps music alive in our schools and communities by donating musical instruments to under-funded music programs, giving youngsters the many benefits of music education, helping them to be better students and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music.
Last year, I made a last minute decision to sign up for Texas BigBeat 2010 and opened my fundraising page just two days before the event. I set my goal to raise $200 for the Mr. Holland's Opus Fund. In just two days, my friends, family and co-workers donated $355! I loved reading the comments that sometimes accompanied the donations. Many wrote about fond memories of school bands or orchestras, or paid tribute to school music directors who influenced their lives.
This year, I'm getting an earlier start and raising the bar. My goal is to raise $500 between now and Sunday, November 6th, the day of the event. I'm hoping to get the word out to everyone I know about this great event and how our collective contributions will help provide music and educational programs to kids in the Houston area.
You might be thinking, "Do I have to write some kind of pledge and then remember to send a check?". No, it's much easier than that. In this event, we raise the money first, then go play the drums and have fun. You can just pull out the old debit or credit card, click on this big button that says "Donate", and charge whatever you'd like to donate to your card. How much should you give? Any amount is greatly appreciated. If all of my friends, family and co-workers each gave $2, I would greatly exceed my goal. It’s up to you. Do you want to help keep music alive in our schools?
