This year's fundraising effort is dedicated to Charles "Stick" Stickney, dedicated MHS volunteer, fellow Washingtonian, and co-founder of Perazone Power. Let the games begin, Stick!
Perazone Power is named in honor of our fearless Washingtonian Ski Club Trip Leader, Ed Perazone, who skied off a trail in a blinding whiteout in Lech, Austria and is paralyzed . After talking with people from Maine Handicapped Skiing (MHS), Ed participated in an adaptive ski program near his home.
I have been involved with MHS, now called Maine Adaptive, since the summer of 2004 when I started as a volunteer kayak and canoe instructor. It naturally followed that I would get involved in the ski program in the winter of 2005. Since then I have trained and become certified as an adaptive kayak instructor and an adaptive ski instructor. I am now starting my 4th year as an advisor to the ski program one day a week in addition to volunteering as many days, summer and winter, as I can.
I love the energy and excitement at Maine Adaptive! Every day I am involved is an adventure for the participants and for me. It can be a challenge to figure out what will work for each individual to help them ski or paddle, and I love exploring that challenge. The people I work with, participants, volunteers and staff, are amazing!
I am honored to be a team captain and to help raise money to keep this program free for the participants. They have enough daily challenges. The smiles each day are so rewarding. Working with young "Mr. AWESOME" (in the photo here) and the others I have had the privilege of skiing and paddling with is one of my greatest pleasures these days.
