As most of you know, I volunteered abroad in Santiago, Chile from September 2006 to June 2007. I worked with at-risk children at a community center (Domingo Savio) and served as the director of the sports committee with VE Global which provided children opportunities to learn sportsmanship and ways to stay healthy. I came back with stories of the children's laughter, tears, challenges and successes as well as sunburn and some great photoes. Even though I am in Columbus, I have not forgotten my 9 months in Chile and how all the people I met touched my heart and how patient they were while I learned Spanish.

Wine Tasting and Raffle
Where: Wine on High, 789 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215
When: September 29, 2011 from 5:30 - 10pm

What if I can't make the wine tasting? Raffle tickets are on sale the entire month of September. Cost is $1 each and 6 for $5. If you cannot find me during this time to buy tickets please donate to this site or mail me a check. Then email your name, phone number, and for which prize(s) you want your tickets to go towards to michelleschackmann@gmail.com and I will enter you into the raffle. Raffle tickets will be sold at the wine tasting and the winners will be drawn at the end of the event. You do not need to be present to win. Checks can be written out to VE Global and mailed to me at 152 Wilber Ave., Columbus, OH 43215. If you would just like to make a donation and not be involved in the events that is encouraged as well.
Where the money goes:
VE Global brings international volunteers to work at understaffed orphanages, community centers, and schools in Santiago, Chile. Over 400 volunteers have worked with the most vulnerable children in the city. The money raised will go to the organizations sports, cultural, reading, and health and wellness programs organized to create more opportunities for the youth it serves.
Mi Club Domingo Savio is a community center in La Granja that VE staffs with volunteers. It serves 45 children between the ages of 5 to 14 and their families’ everyday. The club creates opportunities for homework help and provides workshops such as theatre, art, English, and carpentry. It also has a mother's workshop, outings in Santiago, and takes the youth on vacation in the summer to provide eye opening experiences they are usually unable to do due to income. This past April 2011, Domingo Savio experienced a robbery where computers, sewing machines, food, and numerous other supplies were taken from the center. Money raised by this raffle will help buy new supplies for the center.
