A Solid Rock Response
We carefully walked across her living room concerned that the sinking floor was going to give way under our feet. Our Solid Rock investigation team said the house should be condemned. The house is literally falling down around her. Initially, we were asked to take a look at her house to see what we could do to repair it. We had to walk away, unable to offer any help.
Our friends in Bogalusa persisted. They asked, “If we find donated land will you build her a new house?”
Yolanda’s special needs make it nearly impossible to understand her when she talks. She’s middle-aged, single, unable to work, and will never qualify for a Habitat home. Her disabilities require a daily caregiver she affectionately calls her “husband”. A helping hand is her only hope. .
After meeting Yolanda, we slid further out on the limb. The life in her eyes reveals the excitement and joy she feels about the prospect of a new, safe home on a solid foundation. We committed to build her a new home that would be a gift from the Solid Rock Carpenters: all of us.
The framing was started by our Holiday Team in January 2010. The wall panels were built in the Habitat warehouse. The land donation was arranged by the city of Bogalusa. Washington Habitat managed the site prep and foundation pour. The June 2010 Solid Rock team framed and shingled the 2 bedroom home. The November 2010 team will rough in electric, finish siding, insulate and Sheetrock. Our dream is to move her in on New Year’s Eve. Imagine the party!
The reason for this message is because we need your help funding for this home. We’ve drained the Solid Rock bank account by reimbursing Washington Habitat for $15,000 of the costs they have already advanced on our behalf. The total cost for the home will be about $40,000. Right now we are $25,000 short of that amount.
Will you please help us finish Yolanda’s home? Please make your donation today.
