In a sense, one can say that I've been involved with HDSA as long as I've been with my lovely wife, Pam. That's the reality of Huntington's Disease (HD); it affects not only its victims, but also a larger network of loved ones, family and friends. Sadly, less than one year after meeting my future wife, I was with her the night her mother Linda succumbed to this dreadful disease. It was the only time I would ever meet my future mother-in-law....
In the years that have followed, I have been active with the San Diego HDSA chapter, participating in many fundraising events and helping to put together their first sponsored athletic event, a 5K fun run. More importantly, I have continued to learn about the disease and the community of determined individuals that it has inspired. Of course, I also watch my wife in ways that those who don't live with this specter cannot readily appreciate. Did she leave the front door unlocked because of the disease? Is she showing any symptoms? How about her brother? Bryan calls it "symptom searching," and, unfortunately, it's a way of life for the victims, those at risk and those who share their lives. As I've gotten to know the larger HDSA community, I've been fundamentally affected by their sheer determination to help those who suffer and, more compellingly, to ensure that this is the last generation afflicted with HD. To that end, our local board president enlisted my "help" with a fund raising marathon three years ago. I've been a triathlete and runner for many years, but that was the first time I competed on behalf of something larger and more substantial than my own satisfaction. It was terrific, and it became a regular event in our chapter's repertoire of fund raising events. Renato approached me with an idea far more ambitious and, some would say, crazy-RAAM. After nearly two years of planning and countless hours of training, we're approaching a monumental event. Crossing the country successfully, competitively and safely is only one of the goals of Team 2 Cure HD. We are determined to increase national awareness of this disease, to give hope to those who suffer as a result of it, and, most importantly, to do our part to ensure that this is the final generation afflicted with HD. Are we there yet? No, but we're on our way....
