We know when we bring them into our lives that they won't be with us forever, that there will undoubtably come a day when we have to say goodbye and let go. We know this, yet we allow them into our homes and hearts to appreciate their companionship, endure the pain of their loss and to never look back...
On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, just days after opening the doors of our studio, we received confirmation that our shepherd mix had developed a malignant mass. Tuck was diagnosed with Mast Cell disease, a poorly understood and highly variable form of canine cancer. Sadly, his disease was advanced and had progressed rapidly. After a short, yet valiant effort, the battle was lost on May 1st, 2010. Letting him go was the kindest thing to do - we are certain of that, but we were left feeling the tremendous loss associated with saying our final goodbye...
From our loss, we've found the silver lining and have joined the mission to raise awareness and support for canine cancer research and early detection so that the cause and cure can be better understood.
The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Foundation's Chase Away Canine Cancer campaign aims to bring awareness to the life-saving benefits of early detection. We want all dog owners to value the knowledge that we appreciate in preventative measures, like feeding quality dog foods, getting regular exercise and taking plenty of time out for belly rubs.
Please join us so that one day, there will be a cure. Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support our fundraising efforts. Each $5.00 donation earns you an entry into our raffle, which includes a basket full of Tucker's favorite treats and toys (current estimated worth of $150) , plus a $500 training scholarship to Finish Forward Dogs. We are adding items all the time and have plans to hold the drawing in early November.
