New Hope Cattle Dogs Rescue and Rehoming

BEAR'S STORY - 7-31-11
We need help. We pulled Bear (Brando) off the euthanasia list last week and he has tick fever. His nose started bleeding last night and we got him to emergency vet ($130) and they said it was due to a bad URI. He was still bleeding today so we took him to our regular vet ($60) and she determined it was tick fever. We had to rush him to another emergency vet because she didn't have the resources to care for him because he was critical ($760). We have no funds to continue treatment or pay for 3/4 of the treatment he has already had. He is such a sweet, cuddly boy and this breaks my heart, his foster family and our volunteer base. Please help. They say he needs a blood transfusion estimated around $450 plus whatever else he will need to survive. We are desperately trying to save this dog but have no more resources.

UPDATE: We have already raised funds to pay for 75% of his Tick Fever treatment, including his stay in the emergency hospital. His heartworm treatment will cost anywhere from $1200-1500.

UPDATE 8-8-11
Bear is doing better as well. We didn't expect him to live. He is a true survivor. He has tested positive for Tick Fever and Heartworm. The medication for the Tick Fever is helping him tremendously. He is a different dog since being on his meds. He is happy, active and being a normal dog. He hasn't had any more nose bleeds. Once he is clear of the Tick Fever we are going to treat him for the Heartworm. The treatment is very hard on their system. We are cautiously optimistic he will survive the Heartworm treatment. I will keep you posted. I have added an update (8-6-11) from Bear's foster mom:

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous donations. Bear is doing amazingly well. He is getting more and more energy every day and still no signs of bleeding from his nose. He is really showing an interest in playing and has been picking up toys and playing with them all on his own. He even expressed an interest in playing with my dog last night. He is not trying to run around yet which is good since he is supposed to remain calm. He still has no interest in the chickens though. (Good boy!) He is an eating machine and I now have to keep out only his allotted amount or he will eat until he explodes. He is at a great weight right now though. - Melissa

Another update:
I found something bear let the true heeler personality out on. Gerbils! He spotted them for the first time today and could not take his eyes off of them. My son was worried that he would eat them so we took them out for him to smell. He smelled them, licked them and then proceeded to watch them for the next 1/2 hr with true heeler intensity. I had to let him know the area by their cage is off limits. Luckily he is respectful of space. Still no interest in chickens though. Bear learned to sit today on command. It was a big deal for him. He loved the attention and now wants to perform. Silly boy!

If you prefer to pledge/donate by check, please make it payable to "NHCD" and enter "Bear" on the memo line. The donation mailing address is P.O. Box 947, Gilbert, AZ 85299.

Please help us with Bear's medical costs. It has been a very tough year for us and we don't have the funds to begin Bear's heartworm treatment until we raise at least $400!!!
