Just a little over a year ago these puppies were struggling for their life. Shortly after we agreed to foster the 5 week old puppies, they were diagnosed with parvo. It is a deadly disease which requires a great deal of veterinary care to survive. GABR stepped up to the plate with no hesitation and paid all their vet bills and provided emotional support as well. As you can tell from the picture, they are well loved and have happy "Forever" families. This was a celebration of their first birthday on April 14 of this year. Without the support of GABR this would not have been possible.
Just recently a basset named Cindy was found lying in a ditch by animal control in southern IL. She had obviously been hit...she couldn't walk and wasn't responding to much. They put her in a run at the shelter with no veterinary care to wait out her 5-7 days until she was claimed or died...whichever came first. They gave her water but she was not able to drink. Thank goodness a volunteer at the shelter called Guardian Angel Basset Rescue and found they would take Cindy and pay for any medical costs. (The owner was found but refused to help the basset.) The volunteer approached the shelter and got them to release her and took her to a vet immediately.
Cindy seemed to know that she was getting help...she didn't growl...didn't even raise a lip...just wagged her tail. It was kind of touch and go for a while... no one knew how long she was in that ditch. They thought Cindy had a broken pelvis, she was dehydrated, very thin and tested positive for heartworm.
After being examined by a GABR vet, they found Cindy had a broken leg in two places. She now has a lot of metal in her, but no broken pelvis. There just isn't a sweeter dog and after months of recovery in a foster home, she is running and playing with her brother and living in Indiana in her "forever" home.
These are just two stories of how GABR steps up to the plate and makes "A Celebration of Life" possible. Each year GABR rescues and places over 250 Basset Hounds in the Indiana and Illinois area. As you can imagine, their vet bills are very large, averaging over $10,000 per month. Everyone in GABR is a volunteer and receives no compensation for their work and care of these beloved bassets. It ALL goes to the dogs.
On September 23rd, we're walking in the 2007 Illinois Waddle. This event is held every year in Dwight, Illinois as a benefit for the Guardian Angel Basset Rescue, Inc. We want to help them raise money to pay those bills.
