Dear Friends and Family,
I will be running 26.2 miles in the upcoming ING New York City Marathon on November 4th. All proceeds raised from this event will go to the Zack Meller Foundation, within the Jewish Communal Fund.
The Zack Meller Foundation was established in memory of my son, Zack Meller. He lived a short and difficult 17 months, but his life had a significant impact on all those who knew him.
The foundation's goals are to educate others about the needs of chronically ill children and their families through educational programs in schools, hospitals and communities. To-date the foundation has held several such programs. At Mount Sinai Hospital, the pediatric residents are currently involved in a program called PROJECT DOCC (Delivery of Chronic Care) that has been sponsored and overseen by the foundation. The program enables parents of chronically ill children to teach pediatric residents about their lives, and helps these young doctors to become more compassionate physicians. The residents are invited into their homes and exposed to a typical day in the life of a child who has multiple medical and social needs, as well as the physical and emotional stress on the family. The program has been hugely successful and a wonderful opportunity for both parents and residents to learn from each other.
Another program that was held was called SOARING WORDS. First grade students were involved in decorating bright blankets and pillows that were then distributed to about 30 children in pediatric unit of Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. One parent, upon her son receiving this gift, cried and said "I didn't think anyone cared!". The program also provided a wonderful opportunity for the first-graders to spend a morning activity focused on helping other children.
The first annual school-wide blood drive was held at S/A/R Academy in Riverdale, where over 70 pints of blood were collected. Students were taught about the importance of blood donation, and how easy it is to spend just a few minutes in order to help save lives. It showed them that a gift does not always have to be a game or a toy, but sometimes the greatest gift is one that can be given of oneself.
Your tax-deductible donation will help to create more vital programs such as these. No amount is too small.
