On November 9, 2009, I was contacted by Hounds Haven Basset Hound Rescue in Iowa. A livestock inspector for the State of Iowa asked for help getting 19 bassets out of a puppy mill situation.
On November 15, 2009, we were contacted by Ozark Mountain Basset Hound Rescue about a puppy miller going out of business and asked us to help 15 bassets that were used as breeding stock.
In the past, ABC has helped these 2 rescue groups. They knew they could count on us for help again, but, we never expected a challenge like this.
Here is what we knew:
- 34 bassets hounds were about to be discarded by puppy millers. Either by selling them at a livestock auction to other puppy millers, or be killed.
- None of these bassets have had human socialization
- 34 bassets needed to be spayed/neutered, dewormed, heartworm tested, vaccinated, flea treated, and medical issues addressed
In order to save these dogs, ABCBHR had to:
- Find a way to get 34 dogs to New York
- Find a place to put 34 dogs
- Find 34 adopters
- Find a way to raise money to pay for 34 spay/neuters, shots, heartworm tests, flea treatments, and de-worming
- Rely on our volunteers and supporters to make this happen
After several weeks of phone calls, emails, and the help of many volunteers, the bassets headed to NY! The basset hounds arrived at Boom Towne Canine Center the Sunday after Thanksgiving at 2:00 AM to a warm reception of volunteers!
ABCBHR has spent over $12,000 on vet care and boarding for these 34 puppy mill dogs. If it wasn't for you, these dogs would have had a fate worse than death.
Would you please consider donating to ABCBHR so when the next call of puppy mill dogs comes in, we don't have to hesitate and wonder how we will pay for their care?
Please watch the video I made to see their journey from beginning to Happy Ending.
Thanks for donating!
