Sheryl Calabro's Fundraising Page
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
I am very excited to be planning a return trip to Shanti Bhavan in February. Since my accident, I am filled with a desire and need to give back, and this trip to Shanti Bhavan will allow me to do that. I plan to go to the school to teach for approximately 3 weeks. I would like to arrive at the school with much needed supplies for the students, ranging from text books to stickers to art supplies to clothing. Thus, I am establishing this fundraising effort.
Shanti Bhavan is an amazing place. It is "a home and an exceptional school for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children of India's lowest caste, the so-called 'untouchables' or dalits. The children come from families that have been denied basic human rights for centuries. They are victims of extreme social discrimination and are deprived of the opportunity to live with dignity and economic stability."
The students of Shanti Bhavan have done amazingly well. In June, 2010, we celebrated the graduation of the first class of seniors. All of the children who have graduated from Shanti Bhavan in the last two years have gone on to college with some (like me) even attending law school. This is an incredible feat for children previously deemed both unworthy and incapable of learning. I am so proud of all of the students of Shanti Bhavan.
The boy in the photograph (who is pretending to be Ghandi in a school play) is one of the newest students at the school. He is in pre-k. I cannot wait to meet him and see how Shanti Bhavan changes his life for the better. Thank you in advance for your love and support and for helping me to change the lives of these precious girls and boys.
All my love and my gratitude,
Sheryl
