Special Olympics Indiana provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, offering them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
We are celebrating our 40th Anniversary this year. Throughout the past 40 years, the organization has grown steadily to include approximately 8,000 volunteers, 15 full-time staff, more than 20 sports, and nearly 10, 000 athletes. One-hundred and eighty thousand is the number of people with intellectual disabilities who are eligible for Special Olympics Indiana – 170,000 to go. With the help of dedicated volunteers, Special Olympics Indiana conducted 867 competitions in 2008- an average of three per day.

Summer Games is the culmination of the spring sports season for Special Olympics athletes throughout the state of Indiana and is Special Olympics Indiana’s largest event with 2,700 athletes, 900 coaches, 1,000 volunteers and nearly 5,000 fans.
