Our son, Cory, was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome at the age of 16 while attending Downers Grove South High school. After graduating DGS with honors in 2008 Cory was proud to attend The University of Michigan School of Music as a Music Composition Major. His goal was to add a second major, Music Education and eventually teach. Unfortunately, during the spring semester of 2009 he was forced to withdraw due to health complications of Marfan syndrome. He is currently residing in Downers Grove, receiving available treatment for his condition and hopes to return to the University of Michigan in the future.
Marfan syndrome is a potentially fatal disorder of the body’s connective tissue. Because this tissue is found throughout the body, the disorder can affect the heart blood vessels, joints, eyes, lungs and other body systems. Approximately 200,000 people in the United States have Marfan syndrome or a related disorder.
Since Cory graduated form DGS I have been an active volunteer for teh National Marfan Foundation www.marfan.org and have been working to increase awareess & education, providing online an dlocal support to Marfan patiens and their families.
The National Marfan Foundation, founded in 1981, is a non-profit voluntary health organization dedicated to saving lives and improving the quality of life for individuals and families affected by Marfan syndrome and related disorders. For more information log, on to www.marfan.org
