Our five year old son, William, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) last year. His diagnosis of ASD came years after he had started receiving services to help him develop at the rate of other children his age. Unlike many families who have a child with autism, we knew he was at risk because he has a genetic disorder for which autism and cognitive delays are very common. We were fortunate to know what developmental signs to look for and where to go when we saw them.
William is one of the hardest working children I know and I am so proud of him for everything he has achieved! He is a yellow belt in karate and began to ride a bicycle with training wheels this Spring. William has shown us that being a little different and seeing the world from a different perspective isn't just ok, it is amazing!
Some days we face challenges and have lots of tears. In the end, we wouldn't change things for the world. I learn something from William every day and I am so happy that he is my son.
I am running the Falmouth Road Race to support my son, William, and other children who have autism. Our family is so fortunate to have access to resources that have helped William reach his full potential every day. The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism provides funding for direct services, family based services, recreational opportunities, education, and advocacy to improve the quality of life for individuals and families on the spectrum.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to my fundraising efforts. Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
