 Gigi Shanes-Hernandez, after a courageous 11 month battle with pancreatic cancer, passed away on  April 9, 2009, at the age of 52, surrounded by family and friends. Gigi was the dedicated daughter of Evelyn Garland and Louis Shanes (both deceased), devoted wife of Stephen, caring mother of TaraBeth and loving sister of Leslie Wozniak. She is also survived by her mother –in-law, Joan Maher, niece Jenny White, cousin Amy Goldman and family, sister-in-laws Jeanette (Frank) Gabriele, Karen (Dennis) Tanner, and brother-in-law Mark (Laura) Hernandez.

 A life long Rye resident, Gigi is a proud graduate of the Rye public schools. She also graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology and criminal justice from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY and a graduate degree in guidance and counseling from Long Island University.

Gigi dedicated more than half her life caring and advocating for children and adults with disabilities in Westchester County and Greenwich, CT.  The highlight of her career was receiving the Wholeness of Life Award from the Health Care Chaplaincy of New York in 1998. Gigi was also proud of the fact that she was the first female auxiliary police officer of Rye, serving under Chief McLaughlin.

In addition to her professional work, Gigi enjoyed traveling to places near and far, whether it is far down under in Australia, on the beach at Marco Island, Fl., sailing on Long Island Sound or on the shores of Candlewood Lake.

 Gigi will forever be known as a most caring and loving person who always put others first over her own needs. She touched the lives of many and will be missed by all!
