Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.
For the eighth year running, Team 25 will be gunning to win the Rhino Arks' Rhino Charge to raise money for Kenya's envirinment.
Who is the Rhino Ark? The Rhino Ark Trust was founded 18 years ago in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service to conserve and protect the Aberdare Ecosystem. One of the Rhino Arks primary projects is an electric fence completely surrounding the Aberdare National Park and Reserve. The fence protectsz the enclosed ecosystem, including the endagered Black Rhino and helps eliminate human/wildlife conflicts by protecting the lives, crops and livestock of neigbouring farmers.
Why? The Abedares is one of Kenya's main catchment areas and the source of five of the countries main rivrers, provodong hydro-electric power and water to millions of Kenyans. In the myriad of fauna and flora in the Aberdares, including the Black Rhino, are an attraction for tourists, a keystone for the Kenyan economy. The fence being built by the Rhino Ark is an effort to harmonise all these interests, physical, financial and political, in an equitable and sustainable way. Since the Rhino Arks founding, over 300 kms has been built. In those areas ecosystems, forests, animals and farms are benefiting. But 90 kms of fence still urgently needs to be built and maintained! And you can help do this.
How can I help? To raise funds and awareness for this project, The Rhino Ark and its supporters have devised a novel and excitiing fund-raising event: the annual Rhino Charge! The Rhino Charge is a unique of-road orienteering event. The primary objective of the event is to reach 13 guard posts (check points) in the shortest distace across difficult trackless terrain. Last year over 55 cars entered the event and it raised a record breaking Kshs. 57 milion ($820,000). Meanwhile, production of the fence posts and contruction and maitenance of the fence continues. By August of last year, Phase Six of Eight was completed. Final completion of the fence is now estimated in early 2008. Further, a significant portion (approximately 25%) has gone towards the Maitenace Fund which kickstarted in 2003.
