Life Skills was founded in 1964 by a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities. These parents were most concerned about their children''s futures as adults at a time when the expectations and options for people with disabilities were very limited.
Today, Life Skills is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) agency serving nearly 1,500 adults and children each year with develeopmental and other developmental disabilities across the greater St. Louis area. More specifically, Life Skills helps people with disabilities to become as independent and self-sufficient as possible. People utilize Life Skills to find and keep competitive jobs and to provide support in moving into places of their own and living as independently as possible. Life Skills also offers socialization support that assists people in accessing their community''s leisure activities (going to the YMCA, the library, theatrical productions, etc.) and to develop friendships. Other areas of adult life such as health, grooming, safety, and dating are also explored.
