The Potter Cup "Kids Helping Kids"
In 2005 Paxon Hollow Middle School and Haverford Middle School combined on a fundraising event to benefit pediatric cancer research in the name of Alex's Lemonade Stand. The 3rd Annual Potter Cup will be held January 27, 2006 and the Lemonade Bowl, another event that has grown as a result of the Potter Cup, will be held May 19, 2006. (The Lemonade Bowl will be held at Paxon Hollow M.S. each spring and will incorporate sports' events along with field events designed for the entire student body.)
What is the Potter Cup? In 2004 Dennis Reardon, the Athletic Director of Paxon Hollow Middle School, initiated an event to promote and display the various talents that middle school children have to offer. The idea consisted of an athletic competition between Paxon Hollow Middle School and Haverford. Involved in this event were wrestling, girls' basketball, and boys' basketball. The schools would do battle for a gold cup called "The Potter Cup." The school that won two of the three events would win the cup.
In conjunction with this, our students designed the official Potter Cup t-shirts. Within the framework of their curriculum, art and technology classes made signs and commercials to promote the event. There was a pep rally during the school day. The band and chorus performed at the event in a joint effort with Haverford. A group of our teachers dribbled the game ball from Paxon Hollow to Haverford High School in freezing conditions. We painted kids' faces, had games and prizes for kids of all ages, a live band performed at our event, and the two schools worked cooperatively to put all of this together. Our athletic endeavor quickly became an "all-school" event. Moreover, it was a community event.
In spirit of the Potter Cup and Alex's Lemonade Stand, teachers and students are pledging to shave thier heads with every $20.00 or greater donation recieved. This year we are trying to reach a goal of $3,000. If we reach this goal, Assistant Principal John Beltrante has agreed to shave his head at the Potter Cup. Thank you for your time and generosity.
