Shining Through
For the past 2 years, rival schools, Paxon Hollow and
Haverford
Middle Schools in
Pennsylvania , have brought almost 2000 kids together to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation through their annual “Potter Cup” event. An impressive event hosted by teachers and students includes a pep-rally, dance squad, wrestling, boys’ and girls’ basketball, and even a head shaving fund raiser to show support for pediatric cancer patients.
Last year we had nearly 70 students shave their head (with parent consent) to support cancer victims that lose their hair due to chemotherapy. We called the program “Shining Through”. A goal was set to raise $3,000 in order to shave the Assistant Principal’s head, Mr. Beltrante, in front of the entire student body. Students and the community were able to raise $4,600 for this tremendous cause!
We are hoping for a repeat of last year’s amazing outcome. You see, last year Paxon Hollow’s own, Mr. Gretchen (who now closely resembles George of the Jungle) vowed not to get a hair cut for an entire year until the 2007 Potter Cup to motivate students for this year’s Potter Cup. We have once again set our goal to $3000. If this goal is reached, Principal Dr. Subers will shave Mr. Gretchen’s head center court during intermission at the Potter Cup! To help out, Mr. Costello, a physical education teacher at Paxon Hollow has stepped up and added an additional way to raise funds for this year’s Shining Through fundraiser. We are selling one dollar chances to all students at Paxon. The student whose name gets picked on Thursday, January 25th will get to shave Mr. Costello’s head center court right next to Dr. Subers and Mr. Gretchen in front of 2000 screaming middle school students cheering him or her on!
We are asking students to pledge $20.00 in order to get their head shaved. Head shaving for students will take place in the auditorium after school on Thursday, January 25th. STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE TO SHAVE THEIR HEAD IN ORDER TO DONATE. Donations are greatly appreciated from the community and will go to one of the best causes around. Permission slips for students to get their head shaved can be downloaded from www.mnsd.org/PHMS. Thank you for your generosity and helping to make Paxon Hollow the school that really does make a difference!!!
