Thank you for visiting my Personal Fundraising Page!
Starting August 29, 2009, our passionate team of parents, rock musicians, scientists and friends will climb Mt. Rainier in Washington State (elevation 14,410 feet) to raise money and awareness for curing Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a devastating genetic disease that strikes about 1 in 3,500 boys. A gene called dystrophin, necessary for the development of adult musculature, misfunctions. The disease is diagnosed as toddlers or pre-schoolers start to lag in their abilities to stand, walk, run and jump, and the boys are typically wheelchair-bound by age 12. The disease is 100% fatal, as the boys suffer from respiratory or cardiac insufficiency starting in their late teens and early 20's.
I became familiar with Duchenne muscular dystrophy while I was CEO of a biotech company in Strasbourg, France that was working on a potential medicine for this disease. This is a particularly anxious and hopeful time, because several experimental medicines are working their way through clinical trials.
Venture philanthropies such as CureDuchenne, that quickly, efficiently and effectively match funds with promising therapeutic approaches, are clearly accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into medicines that can help patients. The money you contribute will have a very REAL and TIMELY impact on THIS generation of Duchenne boys.
Our goal is for each climber to raise $14,410 ($1 per foot of Mt. Rainier's elevation). Every dollar is welcome and will make a real difference. Donations of $5,000 or more will receive wide media exposure in this first ever fundraising climb by CureDuchenne, including your name and logo printed on our Summit Banner.
You can read some news articles about our climb at the links provided below, and follow the climbing team on twitter.com, at "climbforacure".
