Every year law enforcement officers throughout the country are killed in the line of duty. These fallen hero's leave behind husbands, wives, children, family and friends. They have paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving the citizens of this great country.

During National Law Enforcement Officers Week in May of each year, over one thousand law enforcement officers ride their bicycles from North Hanover, NJ to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington DC. This bicycle ride, known as The Police Unity Tour, raises awareness of officers who have been killed in the line of duty. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial and Museum in Washington DC.  The Tour leaves New Jersey on May 9, 2010 and arrives in Washington on May 12, 2010.

The Grand Rapids Police Department Unity Tour Team will have the honor of riding for a fifth year for this great cause.  This year we will have 13 members embarking on this amazing journey.  Each person on our team must raise $1700.00 to participate in the Tour; $1000 of which goes directly to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. 

On a personal note, every member of our team agreed that riding in The Police Unity Tour is one of the more emotional and meaningful events that we have experienced. The appreciation shown for the riders by the fallen officers family members is beyond comprehension and truly indescribable.  Seeing the genuine appreciation, caring, comfort and pain that the fallen officers families and friends show  is more then enough motivation to ride a bicycle any distance.
