What: Wig Party! Fundraiser for the Achilles Running Club New York Chapter. $20 at the door includes a drink ticket and raffle ticket. There will be lots of prizes for best wigs. The drink specials are $4 Domestic Beer, $5 House Wine or $6 Mixed House drinks

This team introduces individuals with disabilities to multi-sport competitions within New York state and nationwide. I'm raising money in honor of an athlete who inspires me with her determination, dedication, courage, and amazingly sunny heart- Sarah Heller. See the you tube video attached about her.
Participants, many with no previous athletic experience, are coached in swimming, biking, and running with the goal of competing in mainstream triathlon events. The team participates in as many as six competitions each season including the NYRR Queens Sprint Triathlon and the Westchester & New York Olympic Triathlons. The New York Achilles Triathlon Team is unique because of the wide spectrum of athletes with disabilities that it develops and supports. Our Achilles triathletes have a variety of disabilities including complete and partial blindness, single and double amputations, traumatic brain injuries, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Ninety percent of our Achilles athletes are new to the sport. Of our 20 athletes on the team for 2011, only two of them had done a triathlon prior to joining this team. Most are learning to swim for the first time ever or relearning since becoming disabled and few are experienced bike riders. Many of our athletes would never have the opportunity to pursue their athletic goals without support from Achilles International.
The triathlon team meets in the spring and summer weekly for swim practice and twice weekly for running and bicycling training in Central Park. Triathlons are equipment intensive and without the proper gear Achilles athletes cannot train or compete adeptly against able-bodied peers. Due to the program’s growth in size and skill level it cannot continue to adequately meet its athletes’ needs without an investment in necessary gear and equipment. Funds raised at my party will be used for things such as tandem bicycle maintenance, wet suits for open water swims, triathlon tops, and race entrance fees for Achilles athletes. These items will make an immediate and long lasting improvement crucial to the program’s continued success and development.
I have seen first hand what an amazing impact Achilles makes on lives. In just a year and a half Sarah Heller went from not being able to run a mile to competing in her first triathlon and doing the NYC Marathon! Your support will enable Achilles athletes to alter their self-perception and live fuller, richer lives. The New York Achilles Triathlon Team enables people with disabilities to increase their confidence and self esteem; improve their health and fitness; and develop skills necessary for success in mainstream environments.
